+Ken Livingstone Citizen Ken clearly no democrat!
On +Sky News a few moments ago, Ken Livingston repeated a view which I have heard expressed by various Labour Party members and supporters over the past few years.
In essence, he said Tony Blair was warned that if Britain were to invade Iraq, this would increase the risk of terrorist attacks back home. The UK nonetheless joined the US and invaded Iraq. In the premises, Livingston says, Blair was to essentially to blame for the 7/7 terrorist attacks which were committed on British soil.
Clearly, Livingston does not appreciate that the logic of his argument is at odds with basic democratic principles.
The British government sought a mandate from the British Parliament to invade Iraq and obtained it. It matters not whether, in hindsight, the invasion was legitimate or not.
The point is that in a democracy, no government can allow itself to be dictated to by terrorists. Faced with one of two choices, no elected government should be "compelled" or "obliged" to choose the one which is least likely to offend terrorist groups or any other unelected body for that matter.
A government must choose to do what it deems to be right, and if this is likely to offend terrorists or invite further attacks, so be it. If the people don't agree with the government's choices, they must vote it out of power. Threats from an unelected minority of violent terrorists should never be permitted to exercise any influence on any government's policy.
In Ken Livingston's world, it would clearly not be the government in ultimate control, it would be the terrorists.
The second point that Livingston misses is that terrorists are seldom honest about their real agenda. Instead they resort to any short-term politically convenient pretext or excuse to justify their evil deeds.
For example, how often are the US led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq blamed for the rise of international terrorism? How quickly everyone forgets that these invasions occurred after the attacks on the US on 11 September 2001. In fact, the Afghanistan invasion was an internationally sanctioned and direct response to the 9/11 attacks.
Prior to and on 9/11, there was no US or Western invasion of either Afghanistan or Iraq. And still, the terrorists came....
And may I remind you, that in the 1980's Osama bin Laden and his Jihadi friends had in been fact the recipient of US Military Aid and weapons during their struggle against the Russians, who had invaded Afghanistan. Did the US get any points for this? Clearly they did not!
It's time for people in the West to accept that this terrorism is NOT the result of Western actions. Instead, and at its heart, Jihadi terrorism is clearly an attack on Western existence itself! We fool ourselves into thinking otherwise at our own cost.
