I said in an earlier posting on this blog, if you want to have a world war, you have to invite the Germans, and similarly,  a World Cup semi-without the Germans is unthinkable.

Yes, Brazil, have 5 World Cup Titles to Germany's 3, but they do not have Germany's superb record of consistent excellence.: I quote from an earlier blog.

"17 Appearances in World Cup Finals. 3 Wins
  • 4 Times Runners UP
  • 3rd place on 4 occasions
  • 222 goals in World Cup Finals (prior to 2014), More than any other side in the world
  • Even Brazil, with 5 World Cups, and Italy with 4, have no answer to Germany's record at World Cup Finals.
  • Germany have only once failed to reach the last eight in their 17 previous World Cup appearances. That came in 1938, when they were knocked out in the first round by Switzerland after a replay. "

No nation comes close to Germany's record of consistency at World Cups.

It doesn't seem to matter whether Germany turn up to the World Cup with a team regarded as capable of winning the trophy, or with a team regarded as below-par, they still seem to take their "reserved" place in the quarters or semi's with monotonous regularity.

Since their last win, in 1990, Germany have only gone on to make the final once - in 2002 when they lost to Brazil.

Whatever it is that the Germans have which reserves their place in the last rounds of the world cup, (depth? talent? discipline?  healthy senior and junior league domestic leagues), the opponents they have then encountered, particularly after 1990, have managed to prevent Germany from adding a fourth star to their shirts.

HEAD TO HEAD 12-3
Brazil will be aware of Germany's tournament record. But they will focus instead on Germany's more recent lack of achievement from this stage of the competition onwards. In addition, the head to head record between the two countries favours Brazil by some margin:

Brazil have won 12 of their 20 games, Germany have won only 3

As stated above, their last #WorldCup encounter was in the 2002 final and Brazil won that by 2 goals to nil. That said, the 2002 German team was widely considered below par by German standards, and little was expected of them in Germany itself.

It's not clear why Germany's record against Brazil is so poor. Other European sides like Italy and France are almost on a par head to head. France lead Brazil 3-1 in victories at the World Cup. It has been suggested that perhaps Germany approach matches with Brazil with an abundance of caution instead of playing their natural game.

3 factors favouring a Brazil win:
Whatever the case, these are the factors which do not operate in Germany's favour for Tuesday's match:
  • Brazil have home ground advantage. Yes, this can be turned on its head if the visiting side start well. It could silence the crowd. The weight of expectation of home fans can be turned into pressure by visitors. Ultimately, however, you just have to look at the World Cup History to see how often the winners have won the title in front of home crowds.

  • Brazil's record over Germany should give them a psychological edge.
  • Germany's record in the semi-finals of the last two world cups, and the European Championship two years ago, suggests that they may be vulnerable to pressure at the final hurdle.
Factors which could favour Germany
  • Germany have a well balanced team, full of depth, experience and discipline. Although, only their game against Portugal demonstrates as much at this World Cup, Germany are superb on Defence and on Attack. Their counter-attack is lethal.

  • Germany arguably have the best goalkeeper at the World Cup: Manual Neuer. (See link to Article below)
This pic is a humorous look at the line up for the National Anthems....   FRAvsNEUER....

  • Germany's Thomas Müller, although a midfielder, is one of the leading scorers at this year's world cup and is in dangerous form. He and highly experienced striker Miroslav Klose, are two of the many Germans capable of scoring and exploiting Brazil's defence, which some have described as average. Germany have many players capable of finding spaces in the Brazilian midfield and defence.

  • Germany are capable of scoring early, and if they repeat what they did in 2010, where they defeated England 4-1 & Argentina by 4-0, they could, instead of defending that lead, follow up with a lighting fast second goal. That could silence the crowd and reverse home ground advantage.
  •
  •  Brazil are without their chief striker, Neymar (injured) and Thiago Silva, their inspirational Captain.

  • Germany showed what they are capable of in the 2010 World Cup, but peaked to early. They have certainly not set this World Cup alight with anything close to that form. Since most of the players from 2010 are all still there, this more experienced side may well step up a gear, particularly on attack.
  • Germany are well-drilled and dangerous from set-pieces play. Their ability to score from free-kicks and corners could make the difference in a tight match.

All in all, I believe that, despite home ground advantage, the scales are slightly tipped in Germany's favour for this encounter.

PREDICTION: Germany will win by 2 goals to 1 in regular time.  #GERvsBRA +GERvBRA #GermanyVSBrazil2014

#GermanyVsAlgeria Report

MATCH REPORT:

R16 Eliminator Germany does it again.

Germany 2-1 after Extra time (0-0)

Germany have done it again. Only once have they failed to make the quarter finals, and that was as long ago as 1938...before the Second World War.

Since then, Germany's worst results at the world cup have been to end amongst the last 8, the last 4, the last 3, Runners up and Winners (3 times). See previous blog for details (link at end of article). It is a record of consistency which is unequalled by anyone else in the World, including 5 times Winners Brazil, and 4 times Winners Italy.

And yet, the fact that Germany virtually arrive at a World Cup with a "guaranteed" place in the semis does not guarantee that History will continue to smile upon them, nor does it ensure that Germany will necessarily play well.

In the first half, Germany did not play well. They were uninspiring, and uncreative on attack and never looked as if their strikers were capable of troubling the Algerian goalie.

The first half story of Germany's defence is no better. Algerian forwards launched several speedy attacks which caught the German backs off guard. This left the German goalkeeper having to come WAY out of his goal area on several occasions to intercept promising advances.

Of course a goalie playing the dual role of defender & goalie is unconventional and unwise, it must be said that the timing and execution, not to mention the results of Neuer's excursions into midfield were nothing short of brilliant. It almost wallpapered over the cause of his use of such high risk tactics.

The German defenders were often too slow, and were caught on the hop by several offensive moves by fast Algerian forwards. To boot, the German defence regularly lost its shape, which left gaping holes which Algeria were unable to exploit - not for the lack of trying, mind you.

At half time, Germany looked anything but a side worthy of their illustrious record. On the other hand, Algeria performed well, and certainly above the expectations of many. It was perhaps thanks to Neuer's brilliance that Germany were at least still in the World Cup at half time...despite that the team seemed clueless as to what purpose their continued presence at the World Cup was intended to serve.

After half time, the proper German side turned up like a bride late for her wedding. They were decisive, organised and they attacked with pace. On defence, they were efficient if not ruthless. They kept the defensive pattern intact throughout,  leaving Neuer to forge a more traditional, even conservative, role for himself. Shurrle who replaced an unimpressive Gotze in the 46th minute, seemed to make all the difference.

Germany had several chances to score, and quite frankly, looked like the only side capable of doing so for most of the second half as Algeria's attack was blunted by the German defenders time and time again.

Germany were unable to convert any of their many chances and after 94 minutes, the match went into extra time. Despite this, one felt as though History had finally relented and that it was at last preparing to grant itself a repetition.

Schurrle scored off a cross in the second minute of extra time, which permitted Germany the freedom to launch several sorties directed at the Algerian gaols. In this regard, Germany were unlucky not to hit the net at least once more than they did, although M'Bohlhi, the Algerian goalie deserves a lot of credit for the saves he made. Undeniably this kept Algeria in the match and for this he was deservedly named the  man of the match.

Ozil scored for Germany in the last minute of ordinary time in the second half and that was almost that. But Algeria replied soon afterwards with a brilliant strike from Djabou which thumped past Neuer (a man who concedes few goals) and into the back of the German net. For a few seconds thereafter, the spectre of penalties was raised. But any such Algerian hopes of equalising and sending the game into penalties were dashed by the lack of time and then by the final whistle which confirmed that Germany's proud record would endure despite that their first half performance never deserved  it.  Germany's record of only one non-quarter final appearance in world cups was safe.

They now face France in the quarters. Not sure that history favours the France against Germany unless France can call upon its allies, the US & England. But I digress....

My only regret, apart from the awful first half, is the continued absence of midfielder +Julian Draxler from Lowe's  first choice  line-up.
